CloverQuest Textbook Cover

Along with a collection of illustrations for the CloverQuest Curriculum written by NC 4-H, I was tasked with illustrating a design that encapsulates the journey of this fantasy-themed textbook for elementary students across North Carolina.

Software Used:

  • Procreate

Process

Throughout this process, I utilized Procreate, a simple tablet drawing software, from thumbnail sketches to completion. With the goal to create a “questy” theme for kids in mind, my initial ideations included elements commonly associated with fantastical settings: A knight, a shield, a castle, and a map. While my preference from a composition perspective would have been the castle, the team decided to have me further develop the map since the curriculum was formatted like a journey that a player in a video game might take.

Having secured a composition direction, the next task was to finalize the elements within it. After two rounds of feedback, I was ready for lines and colors. Throughout this process, some elements were requested to be added such as the dragon (which was elected to be used throughout the curriculum as a thematic element). Once the colors were finalized, I added effects to enhance the composition. The goal was to desaturate the colors and add textures to make it feel like the map was set on aged paper. I also created depth with the addition of shadows, the clouds or steam from the dragon’s nostrils, the compass, and the implementation of the first perspective.

Takeaways

Illustration has always been a passion of mine since childhood. Utilizing my design skills and exploring new software was an invaluable experience for my development as a graphic designer. I especially enjoyed bringing the lines and colors to life through the use of effects (namely the clouds and soft shading in the dragon). This was also an excellent exercise in client communication and teamwork. While my design ideas might make more sense to me, the needs of the company/client matter most.
